Finish the task you opened the account for.
You open the account to confirm a contribution arrived. Twenty minutes later, you are reading about something you never intended to buy. Once the payment appears correctly, that administrative task is complete.
Contribution received correctly. No other account task today.
Administration, planning and learning can have different schedules. An article displayed beside your holdings creates no obligation to read or trade now. Some attention remains necessary for failed payments, changed circumstances and account protection.
Give the review a purpose and a place in the calendar.
Adapt the timing to your circumstances and provider requirements.
- JanuaryFull reviewFunding, exposure and goals; account records too.
- AprilAdministrationStatements and payment records.
- JulyAdministrationStatements and payment records.
- OctoberAdministrationStatements and payment records.
- Next JanuaryFull reviewFunding, exposure and goals again.
- Unfamiliar login or withdrawal verify promptly through a trusted provider route and protect access.
- Failed payment or genuine notice check promptly and address the actual deadline.
- Changed income, goal or verified fund terms bring forward the affected review.
A review can end with no transaction. A routine price notification creates no new calendar appointment by itself.
A check ends when its question is answered. Give unanswered questions a next step and a date suited to their urgency.
Use the full review guide to assess funding, exposure and goals. Manufacturing a change is not necessary when the arrangement still fits.
Keep the evidence and conclusion manageable
Vanguard’s principles discuss periodic checks and major life events. Keep useful account statements and a short conclusion rather than ranking every fund you might have bought.
More accounts or unusual holdings can demand more maintenance; that work belongs in the ownership decision. Record when to check next even if nothing changes.
A quiet routine still needs protective alerts.
Keep appropriate security and service alerts enabled, contact details current and access to genuine time-sensitive notices. An unfamiliar login or withdrawal concerns control of money, even when the portfolio still fits the plan.
Price alerts, commentary and promotions serve another purpose. Reduce interruptions unrelated to planned tasks while retaining a route for account and payment problems.
Verify the message independently
The SEC discusses access-change and transfer alerts. Do not follow an unexpected message’s link to verify the same message. Use a trusted route independently.
Read genuine service notices and check statements on a schedule suited to the account. Limiting commentary does not mean ignoring payments or security.
Save the reason, including a reason not to buy.
Keep the fact, question, action and completion condition in a dated note. The examples below show how the reason changes with the evidence.
Two illustrative decision notes
- A holding rallies
- “My goal, income and date are unchanged. The current mix still fits. I have no further reason to increase exposure, so I am making no purchase.”
- Salary stops
- “The salary funding contributions has stopped. I am pausing them while I assess necessary spending, available cash and the shortfall.”
The first note predicts no price fall; the second identifies lost funding. CFPB guidance on automatic transfers highlights cash-flow checks: an affordable instruction can become unaffordable after income or spending changes.
The calendar must leave room for real changes.
A new deadline, country move or verified fund-term change may warrant earlier review. Suspected account misuse may need immediate protection.
For an optional change without a deadline, leave time to state the reason and compare keeping with changing, including costs, tax, exposure and money needed elsewhere. No universal waiting period makes every decision sound.
Set a rule for four messages
Today is 22 October 2026; the fictional routine review is 20 November. A friend reports +40% over an unknown period. Last month’s contribution is confirmed correct. A signed notice reduces salary from 1 November, but the new budget is not calculated. A message reports an unfamiliar login; its authenticity is unverified.
For each input, write: fact or unknown → question → action and timing → completion condition. Do not infer an investment trade from a message.
A completed attention rule
- Today · 22 OctoberVerify the login notice through an independent trusted route and protect control if necessary. Completion means authenticity/activity checked and any necessary protective steps addressed; the message alone proves no breach. The correctly received contribution is already complete.
- Before the next transfer after salary changesRecalculate income minus commitments and available cash. Record an affordable contribution or pause while unresolved. Do not wait until 20 November or invent the new available amount.
- Routine date · 20 NovemberRetain the planned review unless a material fact changes its timing. The friend’s +40% lacks a period and a matched purpose; it establishes no reason to change this goal’s exposure. Optional learning can have its own question and completion condition.
The next chapter measures the exposure and money flows brought to a scheduled review; the calendar alone cannot explain a changed balance.
