From a plan to buying and holding

A broker, your holdings and a careful purchase

Verify the route to ownership, protect access and submit the instruction that carries out the plan you already chose.

Who would receive your money?

Find the contracting legal entity. Independently match its permissions and contact details through the relevant official regulator service; a familiar brand or copied registration number is insufficient.

A verification record for one-off help

Record the contracting legal entity → the promised written review and follow-up → permissions for that specific service in the relevant official register → written scope, payments, complaint route and custody contacts. In the fictional contract you execute and monitor afterwards. Broker registration alone does not establish an adviser’s or manager’s authority or ongoing duties.

Resolve conflicting details and funding instructions through verified contacts. Authorisation guarantees neither investment performance nor product suitability; operational risks remain.

Permissions and clone firms

The FCA guide gives a UK example of permissions and clone firms. It does not establish the status of overseas entities sharing a brand; use the appropriate country’s register and protection information.

A promoter saying official details are “out of date” does not resolve a mismatch. Verify who supplied the funding instructions and who receives payment.

Identify the arrangement behind your recorded holding.

Establish who safeguards assets, records your interest and handles transfer or recovery. A common intermediary arrangement names a nominee on the issuer’s register and the customer’s beneficial interest in broker records. Rights depend on market, security and contract.

Confirm the intended security, not merely a contract referencing its price. Protection has entity, account, asset, event and eligibility conditions. US SIPC concerns eligible customer assets at troubled member brokerages; it does not insure market value. Other countries differ.

Permissions, records and protection limits

The SEC securities-holding bulletin describes US direct and intermediary forms. Ask your provider about safekeeping, entitlement records and recovery under the actual arrangement.

Check borrowing, collateral and securities-lending permissions; treatment of uninvested cash; transferability of fractional holdings; exit fees and restrictions. Read the protection scheme’s own eligibility, limits and conditions.

Keep verified contacts and complaint routes. A valid claim can still involve delays: an immediate bill should not depend on resolving a provider problem first.

Protect recovery as well as login.

Use a unique strong password or supported passkey, multi-factor authentication where available and a protected recovery email. Keep a fallback if your usual device is unavailable, and useful access-change and transfer alerts. These alerts do not require daily price monitoring.

Use a verified address or app and updated devices. Never share passwords or one-time codes with callers.

Correct logos or account information can appear in fraud. Verify unfamiliar activity, payment demands or remote-access requests through known independent contacts before acting.

A limit constrains price, not completion.

Exchange-order distinctions, not a trading strategy. Available instructions and policies vary by firm.

Market order → available prices
Seeks execution; not a guaranteed displayed price or final cost.
Buy limit order → limit or lower
Constrains execution price; some or all may remain unfilled.

For 20 units at a €25 buy limit, maximum consideration is €500 if all fill, before fees and conversion. That promises neither execution nor later value. A chart touching the limit does not establish a fill.

Quantity, duration and fund dealing

20 × €25 = €500 maximum consideration under those conditions. A market order need not fill the entire quantity at one price. Check duration and scope outside normal market hours; available quantity and actual order status matter.

A fund bought at a calculated dealing value follows its cut-off and valuation process. Exchange orders do not describe every fund’s purchase mechanism.

Resolve the status before trying again.

Before submitting, match identifier, class, listing, currency and account. Check units versus cash amount, charges, conversion and borrowing against the chosen allocation and assigned money. A price move does not require redesigning the allocation.

One order for 20 units · a possible sequence

Illustrative buy limit €25. In these branches every fill is at €25; actual fills may be lower. Cash amounts are consideration only, before fees and conversion.

  1. Submitted → accepted and open0 bought · 20 outstanding
  2. 8 units fill8 bought · 12 outstandingConsideration so far: €200
  3. Cancellation requestedLast known: 8 bought · 12 still potentially executableA cancellation request can be pending. More fills can arrive.

↓ If cancellation stops the remaining 12

Final: 8 bought · 12 cancelledTotal consideration: €200

No live remainder. Cancelling has not undone the 8 bought.

↓ If all remaining 12 fill first

Final: 20 bought · 0 outstandingTotal consideration: €500

Another order for 20 could bring the total to 40.

Some of the remaining units could also fill before cancellation. Reconcile the confirmed filled quantity and final remainder before deciding whether any further purchase is needed.

Final order status → confirmation → settlement record

Match units, execution prices, fees and cash movement. A fill does not promise immediate transfer or withdrawal availability.

If an order is rejected, verify the rejection and any related executions before retrying.

Keep the ownership history beyond one app

Retain confirmations and statements outside one app so a provider change does not erase the record. A completed trade need not provide immediately transferable cash.

Once implemented, maintain the plan and respond to material changes. Access to an order button creates no need to keep using it.

Write an implementation record

New fictional sheets specify the same exposure and a €12,000 constant calculation balance for one year: annual fund expense 0.15%, account €18, two purchases at €3 each, no conversions. An optional one-off written review costs €120; no ongoing mandate is included. A fixed payment is due in 18 months.

Sheet O allows withdrawal but omits settlement and cash-arrival timing. Sheet L locks withdrawals for at least five years. Legal provider identity and local account eligibility are still unverified.

Write the selected cost budget without and with the review, assess access by the payment date, and separate completed document checks from open fund/provider questions. Finish with the next action. This is a paper record, not a purchase instruction.

A worked record and rubric
Selected first-year costs
€12,000 × 0.15% = €18 fund expense; + €18 account + 2 × €3 purchases = €42. With the optional review: €162. Spreads, sale/withdrawal, investor tax and future balance effects are unmodelled; this is a selected budget, not future value.
Access finding
L cannot fund the 18-month payment under its five-year lock. O’s permission to withdraw leaves its cash date unresolved, so O is not established to meet the deadline.
Completed / open checks
The stated exposure and selected charges match the fictional sheets. Exact fund/class identity, current methodology/holdings and full terms still need checking. Obtain the named legal entity and verify service permissions through the relevant official register; separately confirm local account eligibility and custody/recovery contacts.
Next action
Request dated settlement/withdrawal terms for O and test the resulting cash-arrival date against the bill. Resolve identity and eligibility before implementation; a familiar brand supplies neither fact.

With ownership and open checks recorded, the next chapter asks which events deserve attention and when that work is complete.

01

What would this protection cover?

A broker displays an investor-compensation logo. Which check most directly establishes the protection available to your account?

  • Whether another company in the same group is authorised in your country.
  • The applicable entity, account, covered assets, events and conditions.
  • Whether the broker's reported capital exceeds the value of your account.
Show the explanation

Correct answer: The applicable entity, account, covered assets, events and conditions.

Check the scheme’s own terms for the actual contracting entity, account, covered assets and events. A related company’s authorisation or the broker’s reported capital does not establish your claim’s eligibility. Protection does not cover every market loss or promise immediate access.

02

What does this order instruction change?

A buy limit order specifies a maximum execution price. What trade-off does that instruction contain?

  • Guarantees the full quantity at the limit once the order is accepted.
  • Uses the displayed quote at submission even if the market moves before execution.
  • Caps the purchase price if executed; part or all can remain unfilled.
Show the explanation

Correct answer: Caps the purchase price if executed; part or all can remain unfilled.

A buy limit caps the execution price if a matching sale is available. It promises neither the last displayed price nor a full fill, and it does not set a later selling instruction. Some or all can remain unfilled. This order distinction is not a trading strategy or protection against future loss.
