The headline fee covers only part of the route.
Fund expenses paid from assets affect your holding without an invoice. A management fee may omit other operating, transaction or implementation costs. For a fund owning funds, check which underlying expenses are included before adding percentages.
Price the actions your plan will require.
- Holding
- Account charges can depend on balances, minimums, caps and use.
- Buying and converting
- Include dealing costs, explicit conversion charges and exchange-rate markups, including for distributions.
- Leaving
- Check sale, transfer, withdrawal and closure charges, and whether holdings can transfer without selling.
A required sale can change exposure and trigger tax. “Commission-free” says nothing about these other costs.
Expense labels and the account schedule
The SEC distinguishes annual operating expenses from shareholder transaction charges. Expense ratio, ongoing charges and total expense ratio belong to different disclosure frameworks; inspect the stated scope rather than assuming identical coverage.
Fee waivers, discounts and promotional rates have dates and conditions. A temporary price need not last throughout your holding period.
The SEC’s brokerage-fees bulletin describes US disclosure rules. Elsewhere, check the applicable documents and all charges for your account. Count the conversions required by contributions, distributions and eventual withdrawals; a rate markup can hide a cost outside a separate fee line.
The spread costs money without a separate charge.
€10,010 paidSell the same 100
€9,990 received
€10 above the midpoint on entry + €10 below it on exit = €20 round-trip loss.
Invented quote, enough units at both prices. Midpoint is not an offered execution price. Excludes commissions and every other cost; real prices and quantities can change.
Bid, ask and the midpoint calculation
The bid is the selling price available for a quoted quantity; the ask is the buying price. Their difference is the bid–ask spread.
Here, 100 × €100.10 = €10,010 paid; 100 × €99.90 = €9,990 received. Relative to the €100 midpoint, buying costs €10 more and selling receives €10 less. Adding the full €20 at both entry and exit would double this example’s cost.
The unchanged quote isolates measurement, not a trading strategy or a promise that a displayed quote will fill the whole order.
A lower fund fee can belong to the dearer arrangement.
Invented comparable exposure: €10,000 average invested value, one purchase and €10,000 converted. Selected charges only; spreads, taxes, sale and transfer costs excluded. Not quotes, recommendations or an account-value projection.
- Fund €10
- Platform €60
- Purchase €4
- Conversion €50
- Fund €25
- Platform €0
- Purchase €2
- Conversion €10
Both bars start at €0 and use the same euro scale. Percentage fund expenses use the average invested value. Conversion percentages apply to money converted.
Add a service or account layer only when the contract prices it separately from the charges already counted. The four help budgets isolate that service choice; this budget prices the stated use of the account.
A later year may involve no initial conversion, a larger balance or several small contributions. This first-year estimate is not a permanent annual rate; actual accrual follows balances and charging terms.
Compare the selected charges
| Charge | A | B |
|---|---|---|
| Fund expenses | 0.10%, about €10 | 0.25%, about €25 |
| Annual platform | €60 | €0 |
| Purchase | €4 | €2 |
| Conversion | 0.50%, €50 | 0.10%, €10 |
| Selected total | About €124 | About €37 |
A totals €10 + €60 + €4 + €50 = €124; B totals €25 + €0 + €2 + €10 = €37. Budget excluded costs separately.
Recurring expenses also leave less money for future compounding. Recalculate for the actual contribution or withdrawal pattern rather than projecting these selected totals indefinitely.
A budget differs from a net-return calculation.

Do not subtract them again.

Check the actual return definition. A fund–index gap can already contain fees, implementation and taxes; adding the gap to the expense ratio can count the same effects twice.
Service, local tax and switching costs
Taxes require a separate local assessment. Investor, account and investment rules determine their treatment; a fund-fee comparison cannot settle it.
First establish suitable access, investments, records and custody. A small annual saving may not justify an immediate sale, conversion or tax bill; assess the next contribution separately. Keep the fee schedule and dated budget, updating when charges or use change materially.
