Which borrower owes this particular payment?
Identify issuer, obligation, currency, dates, collateral, guarantees and ranking. A familiar group does not make every subsidiary a guarantor. Rights and enforcement depend on contract and law.
Secured collateral can be insufficient or hard to realise. For claims on the same debtor, higher-priority claims → subordinated claims is the repayment order, subject to contract and law; it specifies no recovery amount or timing. Government issuers also differ in credit characteristics and currency.
Separate issue names from repayment sources
Buying three issues from one borrower retains one repayment dependence. Foreign-currency government receipts need not match spending currency. The SEC describes the lending relationship, not universal enforcement: seek an explanation where guarantees, collateral or repayment order are unclear.
Assessing an allocation does not require becoming a credit analyst or assembling individual issuers.
A rating answers a credit question.
It assesses relative creditworthiness of an issuer or obligation. Check subject, agency, scale and date. Investment-grade versus high-yield categories do not divide all risks into safe and unsafe.
Grades can change without warning. They insure neither repayment nor suitable price, liquidity or duration; agencies may disagree. Several favourable grades create no guarantee.
Agency definitions and conflicts
Agency scales and definitions differ. Ratings are model-based judgments, and conflicts of interest can affect the process. Keep them alongside claim terms and portfolio purpose rather than counting letters as independent protection.
The bigger promised yield may reflect greater doubt.
YTM uses scheduled payments. It does not reduce them for every possible default outcome. A low price can express doubt about payment rather than offer more dependable income.
Borrower weakness and poor liquidity can worsen together, with prices falling before default. The SEC treats these as separate risks. Match currency, maturity and contractual options before attributing a yield gap solely to credit.
A promised coupon is not a receipt.
Invented €1,000 purchase, €80 annual coupon. Default before any coupon; assume final recovery of €300, no coupons and no remaining claim.
Timing unspecified
The unpaid €80 cannot fund a bill. A fund spreads individual defaults while retaining common downturn and credit risks.
Account for unpaid coupons and delayed recovery
€300 − €1,000 = −€700. Annualising requires the recovery date; the nominal calculation omits it. Multiple borrowers can encounter trouble together.
Look beyond the average grade.
For near-term essentials, test funding after missed payment or a difficult sale. For diversification, inspect dependencies shared with shares or employment income.
Check fund credit-quality distribution, mandate limits and concentrations. An average can conceal weaker debt; “income” specifies no borrower strength. Record why the exposure is accepted and what warrants review. A downgrade calls for reassessing role and mandate, not predicting the next price; this complexity belongs in the implementation choice.
