Trace two levels of ownership records.
Supplied evidence: A — account agreement, 1 October 2026; S — account statement, 22 October 2026; F — fund document, edition 30 September 2026.
Your fund units
You → Broker B Ltd's entitlement record → nominee N Ltd's omnibus record of Fund F units
- Contract and country
- Given in A: Broker B Ltd, Country B; account EDU-001; agreement 1 October 2026. The brand is not the contracting entity.
- Holding on 22 October
- Given in S: Fund F, class F-EUR-ACC; 100 units × €50 = €5,000. This is an invented class label, not an ISIN. €5,000 is a valuation, not a promised payout.
- Nominee arrangement
- Given in A: N Ltd, omnibus premise. This supports the stated fund-unit record chain; account-specific title and remedies need their actual terms.
- Uninvested cash
- Given in S: €200, separately from the €5,000 units. Not established: whether this is a bank deposit, client money or fund units; request the cash terms.
- Trade and verified contact
- Not established: trade confirmation and its date; independently verified provider contact and verification date. Request the confirmation and verify the contact through an independent route.

The fund's assets
Fund F → depositary D → delegated custodian S → securities held for the fund
Given in F: Fund F, Country C; depositary D and delegated custodian S. This is the fund's custody network, not another personal record of your units at each underlying issuer. Here S is a firm's fictional name; extract S above is the account statement.
Still not established: actual provider authorisation, scheme membership/eligibility, covered events/limits and outbound transfer/recipient acceptance. Request entity-specific evidence and both providers' confirmation for the exact class, whole/fractional units and charges.
Country B/C, duties and remedies are premises of this invented structure, not statements of real law. Two record levels do not establish immediate access or put your name on every underlying issuer's register.
The extracts support names, dates and amounts. They leave permissions, protection and transfer feasibility open; a complete-looking balance does not fill those gaps.
Identify firms, safekeeping and cash arrangements
Verify provider permissions and contacts, holding and clearing firms, account structure and the fund’s safekeeping providers. Cash may stay with the broker, move to a bank or buy a fund, with different terms.
SEC/FINRA describe US street name: an intermediary/nominee on the issuer’s register, with broker records identifying beneficial interest. Other markets’ structures/rights differ. The Vanguard prospectus’s depositary/delegated custody network concerns fund assets, not your broker’s record of units. Check responsibilities, delegation and remedies at each level; daily settlement-message investigation is unnecessary.
The same units can return at a lower price.
100 fund unitsSame quantity in both valuations
Before
100 × €50 = €5,000
Returned
100 × €40 = €4,000
Value bars share a €0–€5,000 scale.
Asset separation aims to distinguish customer property from firm assets. It establishes neither perfect compliance, immediate access nor recovery amount, and insures no market price. Here, the 20% loss occurs without missing units.
Separate value changes from resolving missing property
The €1,000 loss is 20% of €5,000, not missing units. A real recovery may return less property or take time.
FINRA’s US closure examples distinguish transfer/return of property from missing-asset cases. Reconciliation, transfers and evidenced claims can delay resolution; those procedures supply no promise for another jurisdiction.
Read protection for the actual entity and account.
Check covered events, customer/property eligibility, limits, exclusions and claims. Securities schemes, bank-deposit protection and private insurance differ. Parent membership need not cover an affiliate; citizenship alone does not settle eligibility.
SIPC’s separate membership and customer conditions
A foreign subsidiary gains no membership through its SIPC-member parent. Separately, US citizenship or residence is not itself required for an eligible customer of a member broker; firm membership and covered property/claims still need checking.
These are US examples, not worldwide coverage rules. SIPC addresses eligible missing customer property after brokerage failure; it does not insure investment prices. Neither an American brand nor non-US citizenship alone decides coverage.
A valid claim does not establish immediate access.
Read relevant custodians’ laws/claims procedures and account terms. The SEC’s international bulletin distinguishes safekeeping, legal remedies and currency controls: what you own and how you can move or sell it require separate answers.
Does another brand remove the dependency?
A second provider can offer another outage route while adding fees, security and reporting. Brands can share custodians/clearing firms. Identify the problem to reduce before opening accounts; splitting identical holdings diversifies no underlying companies or markets.
No account count or balance universally requires another broker. Do not assume a second account doubles protection limits: scheme rules may aggregate accounts. Independently accessible bill reserves can address immediate funding without duplicating the portfolio.
Keep evidence and a workable exit.
Keep A/S/F and any later confirmations outside the login, alongside a verified contact. In EDU-001 that contact and its verification date are still missing. Reconcile discrepancies promptly; a screenshot alone is incomplete evidence, and failed login alone establishes no missing property.
Confirm that the receiver accepts exact holdings and the originator can deliver them, including restrictions/costs and any required sale. Sale/repurchase can have different tax effects from transfer.
Try another record: the same brand now names a different contracting affiliate. The only holding evidence is a balance screenshot showing two fractional units; receiver acceptance is unconfirmed. Write three fields: known / not established / next evidence. What can you conclude during a login outage?
Check the second record
Known: the supplied record names a different affiliate and shows two fractional units; neither is independent verification of title or status. Not established: affiliate protection, exact class/entitlement, cash terms, transferable quantity, receiver acceptance and delivery. Next evidence: actual affiliate agreement/status and scheme conditions, dated statement/confirmation, and both providers’ confirmation for the exact fractional holding and costs. Do not inherit the parent’s coverage or infer loss from an outage. Check cash separately and obtain the contact independently.
Transfer constraints and an unavailable provider
Fractional entitlements, account types and market access can restrict transfers; check both providers. For suspicious recovery demands, obtain complaint/contact routes independently. The FCA guide illustrates UK permissions/clone-firm checks, not worldwide rules.
During outages, retain notices and establish affected services through verified support. Failed login proves no loss of holdings. Protect the account and report suspected unauthorised activity promptly. Avoid duplicate orders while the first status is unknown, and preserve confirmations and references.
